Care Support Workers

Val Shute

My role as Carer Support Worker started back in 2003 when working for Barton and Upper Manor Road Surgeries. I then sourced additional hours working as a Carers Assessor based at Brixham Hospital.  Services, support and systems have changed and our role has evolved. I am now working as a Carer Support Worker for Mayfield Medical Centre, Totnes Road, Fridays but also covering Cherrybrook surgery when needed. My other role is that of Community Care Worker in the Social Care team based at Kings Ash House.  I feel that both roles work well together and complement each other. I enjoy meeting up with carers who do such an amazing job looking after their loved ones and I hope in some small way I can make things easier for them by providing them with information, contact and support.

I joined Cherrybrook surgery in January 1998  to set up and co-ordinate a patient and carers' support group. This role evolved into my current Carer Support Worker post with Mayfield. I work 2 mornings a week, usually based at Cherrybrook. I also cover the whole of Torbay as a specialist Carer Support Worker for people caring for an adult family member or friend with a learning disability. Family carers provide vital unpaid care and deserve recognition. It's a privilege to be able to work with so many amazing people, take time to listen, and help them access support if needed.
