Psychoactive Substances

You can’t really be sure what you have bought, or been given, or what effect it’s likely to have on you. We known that the use of many like ‘Clockwork Orange’, ‘Bliss’, ‘Mary Jane’ 'Mephedrone' , 'Ivory Wave', and '5-IT' have been directly linked to emergency hospital admissions, and in some cases, deaths.

Torbay Hospital and Old Farm Surgery are seeing an increasing number of patients having bad effects of these drugs, including a recent admission to Intensive Care and a teenager with a Stroke

These drugs used to be sold as ‘legal highs’ but they have been found to contain one or more substances that are, in fact, illegal

Torbay drug and alcohol service
The Service provides Open Access sessions and Appointments, offering assessment, advice, information, treatment, support and onward referral to other adult drug services if indicated. It has four in-house prescribers (2 GPs and 2 Non Medical Prescribers), offering substitute opioid prescribing (rapid prescribing service available). Treatment is also available for all illicit drugs, legal highs, dependency on prescribed medication and relapse prevention support. There is wide provision of group work and care planned one-to-one psychosocial interventions to drug dependent adults aged 18+ with low to moderate needs. The service also offers Blood Borne Virus (BBV) testing and immunisation.
